What is a career?
A career is a profession that occurs for a significant amount of a person's life with opportunities for progress. A job is not a career. What is the difference?
In a career, there's opportunities for progess. For instance, if you want to work in education, you must progress through school or training. Many see careers as long term professions. A job is more like a short term of employment in order to gain money.

When should you start deciding?
When should you decide what you want to potentially do for the rest of your life? Middle school? High school? College? When you were five-years-old?
You should choose when something interests you.
It doesn't matter if you're in middle school, high school, or even in college. Whenever something interests you, try it. If you like art do things that are available to you to figure out if you want to do it for a living. If you like music take music classes or lessons, or learn how to play an instrument. If you like it, keep doing it. If you don't, move on. This means you don't have to decide when you're in high school or college, or when you were five-years-old. Don't stress about it, and just find something that you enjoy doing.

PERSONALITIES
Your personality can affect your career or job.
HOW DOES MY PERSONALITY AFFECT MY CAREER?
How you act around others or what you like to do in your free time could help/affect your career. If you're an introvert, you'd most likely be more comfortable working in a place where you could do work alone, or with small amounts or interaction. If you're an extravert, you'd probably like a career/job with interactions and with others. You probably wouldn't become a surgeon if you're emotional. Though, you might become a nurse. Take advantage of your personality and choose the right career or job for yourself.

BEING INTROVERTED.
I'm introverted. I happen to have the personality code of INFP. (Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Prospecting) In my future, I plan to become a Manga (Japanese comic books) artist. Although, that may seem completely unrealistic, I still plan to try. Manga artists tend to work in offices, or at home. They usually spend time with small groups of people or alone when working. When making manga (Japanese comic books), you must be emotional. If you're not emotional, your stories or drawings may be bland. INFP's tend to be creative and hard-working. Many have a strong will of dedication. (www.16personalities.com/infp-strengths-and-weaknesses) In fact, this career suits me well. (Introverted - usually alone or with small groups of people, Feeling - being emotional; putting your feelings into your work, etc.) If I chose to be a surgeon, that would be incredibly difficult for me. You have to be emotionless. You have to be able to let go quite easily.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY.
Consider CULTURES. If you lived in Japan wanted to become a novel editor, wouldn't it help if you spoke Japanese? Or if you lived in New York, wouldn't it help if you spoke English well?
Learning another language or having more knowledge on another culture can give you an advantage when choosing a career.
ABILITY VS APTITUDE
An ABILITY is a skill that you have to "work" for. An APTITUDE is a hobby or action that someone is naturally skilled at.
When choosing a career, consider your ABILITIES and your APTITUDES. If you have an aptitude for art, it's going to be easier and less work for you to become a graphic designer or artist--It's an advantage. You may have an aptitude for art, but not be skilled at painting. You may have to learn that ABILITY. It would be much harder if you tried to become a accountant. That career deals with math. If you didn't have a aptitude for math; it'd be hard, but not impossible. It's just going to take longer. Take advantage of your aptitudes.
COLLEGE?
When someone mentions choosing a career, most people mention going to college and getting a degree. Yet, do you really need to go to college to have a decent career? Well, the answer is; No, you do not have to go to college. Honestly, it depends on what career you want to have. Going to college and having a higher level of education will allow you to make more money, but you do not need to go. When businesses hire people, they'll probably look at where you went to school. This option is only available once. When you're going to interviews or applying for a second job, they'll only look at your past jobs. So, do you really need to spend plently of money by going to a college that is well known, like Harvard or Yale? No, you don't. You can simply attend a community college; but, it's your choice.
PLAN TO OWN A BUSINESS?
Consider the PROs and CONs when owning a business.
There are many PROs and CONs when owning a business. For instance, if your business is successful or not. If your business is successful, then you'll make money. If your business is unsucessful, then you'll lose money or not make any at all. 1 in every 5 small businesses is successful. You have to pay your employees, right? This could become a dillema if your business isn't successful. You can't keep all the money you make. You have to make many careful decisions and choices. You may get the opportunity to choose who you work with (hiring), but you will have to fire employees as well. If you plan to start your own business, take time to think about everything that goes into a business.
